Rain showers.

Today in northern Mississippi, the world is freshly washed and drenched with a late May rain shower. I am propped up in my four poster writing with my little dog beside me. All around us, the sounds of the rain are restful and quiet. Outside, fragrant gardenias bloom on the hillside, and my soft pink roses droop heavily with the weight of the water.

From my vantage point, everything looks green, full, and beautiful.

Ezekiel 34:26
I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing. I will send down showers in their season–showers of blessing.

Rain showers are my perpetual entry on my good things list.

When the hot days of late spring and summer in the south get to be too much, a rain shower cools everything off. Showers even seem to make us all more cheerful. Cooled off and in a cleaner world, we smile more and act less grumpy.

Rain showers make me want to clean and shine everything indoors to give the inside the freshness of the outside.

Happily puttering indoors, I also want to make soup or simmer something all day. Rain brings the refreshing that we need, a lift to our spirit man.

Leviticus 26:4
I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.

It is still warm out, but I feel quenched and satiated by the downpour.

When I check on my small raised bed garden planters, they are reaching up and drinking the rain, happy to get the drenching.

Somehow, I also feel safe. I am reminded that God is still God and his world is still beautiful.

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters…

The Lord Is My Shepherd Psalm 23,  ESV

A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

From my thoughts this morning:

Thank you Father God,
for rain showers,
every May and June day to come,
Every season, and in every moment, we pray your perfect will be done.

Send your joy,
remove our sadness,
and in it’s place, more peace, more generous forgiving love.
And, when we hear you, and lie down in green pastures, let your refreshing showers come.

Barefoot and writing,
Kim
